I once heard Whoppi Goldberg make the joke:
“Black republicans make as much sense to me as Jews for Jesus”.
That is how I’ve been feeling everytime I read Latino Pundit. The blog is good. Some of the people that comment are idiots. They are they kind of Latinos who refer to themselves as Hispanics. Check out what some of them have posted.

HOMEOWNER ASSOCIATION SUES BORDER WATCH GROUP / Arizona Daily Star
The head of a civilian border watch group has been sued by a homeowners association for operating the group out of a home there. The Pueblo del Sol Property Owners Association Inc. sued Glenn Spencer to stop him from continuing to operate the American Border Patrol from a rented home in the neighborhood.KICANAS JOINS 2 OTHER BISHOPS WHO OPPOSE IMMIGRATION BILL AND CALL IT ‘BAD PUBLIC POLICY‘ /Stephanie Innes /Arizona Daily Star
Bishop Gerald F. Kicanas of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Tucson joined the bishops of Phoenix and Gallup, N.M., on Wednesday in opposing Proposition 200. The three bishops, who represent what’s estimated at nearly 1 million Catholics in Arizona, say the proposition will neither fix the state’s complex immigration problems nor reduce the number of undocumented people crossing the border from Mexico into the United States.SOME PROP. 200 LEADERS SEEK BOYCOTT OF FIRMS FUNDING ITS OPPOSITION / Howard Fischer / Arizona Daily Star
Some of the leaders of a group supporting Proposition 200 want Arizonans to boycott the businesses that are financing the opposition. Rep. Russell Pearce, R-Mesa, said major corporations in the state don’t want the initiative to pass because they benefit from the cheap labor from those who cross the border illegally.Category Uncategorized | Tags: | No Comments

Union Pickles
September 17, 2004 by elenamary
I used to be a union organizer for migrant cucumber and tomato pickers, with the Farm Labor Organizing Committee. While working for FLOC we started a boycott of Mount Olive Pickles in North Carolina. That was about 7 years ago (even though the articles state 5.5). Well, FLOC as won. You can read about at the NY Times, here, or at the FLOC website, here.
The amazing thing about all of this, is that these are H2-A workers. Which means these workers are allowed to come in to the United States legally by the US Department of Labor, to work a certain crop and then return to Mexico. These are some of the hardest people to unionize. All migrant farm workers are difficult to unionize because the tend not to be in the same State for more then eight weeks. These H2-A workers are tracked by the government and fear immediate deportation for unionizing or asking for pay above the minimum wage. They are in some ways even more exploited than undocumented migrant farm workers.
All in all this is good news!Category Uncategorized | Tags: | No Comments

hiSPanIC month
September 17, 2004 by elenamary
I detest the term “Hispanic”. It focuses on Spain the colonizer while ignorning the Indigenous, African, Asian, and ohter European ethnicities that are a part of us. Also, the term Hispanic reminds me too much of the word spic.
Anyway, a local NBC station has put up a website for Hispanic Heritage Month.
I know some of these things shouldn’t bother me but they do.
For example their site “Tell us about a Hispanic Who Influenced You“. Can you picture them doing a story, titled “Tell us about an Anglo who influenced you?”. They probably wouldn’t because I believe they see their viewers as Anglo. They are “otherizing” us. They also have a quiz “Economics And Politics Of 20th Century Latin America”. This month is to celebrate our culture, and our status as Americans. Why, would you include this quiz? Again, would you for United Black World Month, offer a quiz titled “Economics of Africa?”Category Uncategorized | Tags: | No Comments

Mexicanos al Grito
September 16, 2004 by elenamary
Today, the 16th of September is Mexico’s independence day from Spain. Independence day is referred to as “El Grito”, “The Cry/The Scream”. El Grito, is Celebrated at Midnight on the 15th-16th. Mexicans celebrate all day the 15th, eating, drinking and meeting in the town square for the official entertainment of singers, dancers and of course, the social entertainment of friends, gossip and such.
As midnight approaches Mayors, Governors (the President leads the one in Mexico City)and the like, lead the people in the town square in “El Grito”.
The leader will say “¡Que Viva La Revolucion!, ¡Que Viva…!”
Long live the revolution, long live the revolutionary heroes, Long live the founding fathers, etc.
Each Time he says “long live such and such” the crowd will cry back “¡QUE VIVA!” May it live! Then at midnight, the leader will say 3-5 times “¡Que Viva México! The crowd responds each time it is said with “¡Que Viva”At midnight, the fireworks go off, people continue eating and drinking until exhaustion hits hard. The 16th, for the most part is spent at home resting from the night of merry-making.
To hear the national hymn, which I love, go here click on “Audios del Himno Nacional” and then click on the first version “Version Parcial Coro niños” (Partial version Childrens Chorus)
