  2. murder the leading cause of death in pregnant women

    November 16, 2004 by elenamary

The leading cause of death for pregnant women is murder. You can read about it at the National Organization for Women (NOW), Court TV, About Abuse, Massachusetts Department of Public Health, and Journal of American Medical Association.

I was discussing this with Alexi, but when he asked “why” and “who” murders these women, I didn’t have an answer. It seems to be, and most of the sites listed above, address this issue, that these women are being killed by their husbands/boyfriends. Many feel that either they have “lost control” or are jealous of the attention. It comes down to the same thing that exisits in almost all cases of violence, that is control and power.

  4. me? college?

    November 12, 2004 by elenamary

La Cindy from Lotería Chicana, is doing research on minorities who are first generation to attend college…I would be one. She asked for a story but I find it easier to directly answer her questions:

When did you know you were going to college?
I guess my first day as a full time student on campus was when I realized I actually was going to go to college.

Who/what influenced you most in this decision? Peer pressure. My High School class had a 98% rate of seniors starting college right out of High School. Everyone was going to college, I didn’t know what else to do.

What role did your parents play? They didn’t really understand the idea of going to college…in fact my dad thinks I am working on my associates degree. I’ve tried to explain it to him but he just doesn’t seem to understand. My mom didn’t know I was applying to schools or what was going on in terms of school she just wanted to make sure I graduated from High School.

What type of high school did you attend? What kind of resources did they offer?

I attended two high schools. I did 9th grade twice, by choice. Once in Mexico during my year of “finding myself” and then again at the high school that I attended for four years. The High School here in the United States was in Columbus, Ohio in the suburb of Upper Arlington—a wealthy, white, protestant suburb. The High School had a “College Center” with counselors who focused on getting us into college and scholarships. I was told that it was probably a waste of my time to apply to OSU that I wouldn’t get in, I was not given options about other schools.

Who (if anybody) helped you navigate the “search” and “choice” stages of applying to college? (typically begins in junior year).

No one. I didn’t realize why everyone was so worried junior year about SAT, ACT, essays etc. I didn’t search for schools or look at schools. I applied for schools my senior year.

Why did you apply to the schools you applied to? Quality? Student makeup? Specific program?
I applied to three schools. I applied to them because everyone in my class applied to them as their “fall back schools” and because they were all in Ohio, I didn’t know that I could apply anywhere else. I applied to Ohio University, Ohio State University and Kent State University.

Why did you choose the school you attended?
I emailed Ohio University the day after I sent my application and asked them to withdrawal it because that day they had named a building after Governor Voinovich (an idiot republican who is still alive and now a Senator). The following day OU replied that it was too late to withdrawal my application and that I had been accepted with full scholarship into their business program…I declined. Kent State also accepted me. I knew nothing about it, and had no idea about dorms, where I would live, how I would get there, so I also declined. I went to Ohio State University, five minutes from my home, it was familiar. I knew how to get there and figured I could live at home…what else was I going to do?

  5. sex, books, research

    November 9, 2004 by elenamary

I am going to have to buy two copies of a book. One for me and one for the OSU library to replace the one I lost…shhhhh don’t tell ‘em just yet. The book is Dr Tatiana’s Sex Advice to All Creation: The Definitive Guide to the Evolutionary Biology of Sex by Dr. Olivia Judson. It is a really fun easy to read book. There are letters written from different insects to Dr. Tatiana in the sexy-racy style of Sex in the City.

I’ve been thinking about this book and sex studies since reading a story in today’s New York Times: Long After Kinsey, Only the Brave Study Sex. I’ve been wanting to do some research before med school and the article got me inspired to email some friends and mentors asking for advice on doing medical research either with sexual studies or ethnic studies. I got some great responses. I’ll include one of the response in the extended entry, below.

I also discussed with my favorite Doctor from La Clínca Latina my worries about the time it is taking me to finish undergrad. He was very supportive, and asked me why I was rushing myself. Rushing myself? I haven’t felt like that. He told me that a lot of the people clinic where there to support me and to take my time, to not pressure myself. He was so great. I love him dearly. And now to paste one of the great emails about research.

  6. Fuck the South

    November 9, 2004 by elenamary

Mari from Sensory Overload offers a link to Fuck The South.

Let’s talk about those values for a fucking minute. You and your Southern values can bite my ass because the blue states got the values over you fucking Real Americans every day of the goddamn week. Which state do you think has the lowest divorce rate you marriage-hyping dickwads? Well? Can you guess? It’s fucking Massachusetts, the fucking center of the gay marriage universe. Yes, that’s right, the state you love to tie around the neck of anyone to the left of Strom Thurmond has the lowest divorce rate in the fucking nation. Think that’s just some aberration? How about this: 9 of the 10 lowest divorce rates are fucking blue states, asshole, and most are in the Northeast, where our values suck so bad. And where are the highest divorce rates? Care to fucking guess? 10 of the top 10 are fucking red-ass we’re-so-fucking-moral states. And while Nevada is the worst, the Bible Belt is doing its fucking part.
