  2. Segundo Aire

    January 17, 2005 by elenamary

  3. what is up with that?

Seyd is in town and I am loving it! So I don’t have time for a decent entry but did want to ask all of you a very important question. Who is it that that told some Latinas that black lipstick outlining is hot? Maybe I guess it is hot with sunglass on top of your head and big hooped earrings, and three-to-four large bags that knock things over as you swish by in your spandex pants. Anyone find this attractive? Off to party with my gentlemen.

  4. More Mirish

I am asked every so often why I identify so much with my ethnicity and why so much more with my Mexican than my Irish side. Those are two very different questions.

I identify with being Latina mainly for two reasons. I very much feel Mexican, I went to school in Mexico, have friends and family in Mexico, it is culturally a part of me. Even if I weren’t Mexican and had the experiences I’ve had, I would still feel that I was very culturally Mexican while not ethnically.
Much like El Oso he may not be Latino but has been around it, developed within it. This reminds me of a kid here in Columbus. His name is Francisco Hernandez or something stereotypical like that. He hangs out with all the Greek-Americans, he grew up with them and speaks Greek, attends the Greek Church. He is culturally Greek, ethnically Mexican. I am culturally and ethnically Mexican.

So why isn’t my Irish part just as important? It is in some ways. However, you must understand I am first generation Mexican, fourth generation Irish. I’ve never been to Ireland (I would like to go), I don’t live or interact with other people who strongly identify as Irish through language, food or religion. I’ve only interacted with my Irish side once, and that was with the Irish-Americans. The racism at the family reunion was both overt and covert. And my favorite part of it was when one of my dad’s cousins, Kevin O’Conner, said to my mom “I don’t care that you are Mexican just make sure your children don’t marry English.” I guess culturally I do have that, a bitter (illogical) taste in my mouth when it comes to the English.

Here are two blogs for you (thanks Julio) from some other Mirish:

  6. chicano shadow puppets

    January 14, 2005 by elenamary

Okay, I am supposed to be in class in 17 minutes (actually our class is meeting at a chain-bar at 1130am…long story) I haven’t showered and I am watching videos on Ebaums. I blame my brother Patrick (good Irish catholic name) and Carlos M., they are the ones who get me interested in these stupid childish videos.

I am watching the video of shadow puppet monkeys…which is hilarious. You can see the video either here, here or here (the last one you can stream).

Anyway, I am watching and the guy starts with “This is the story of two monkeys” and he completely sounds like a valley or south Cali Chicano. I am thinking this has got to be some Chicanos. Who else would come-up with this. Then one of the guys in the background says “Es historico man?” When the shadow puppets finish you hear some “bravos”. Watch the video and listen to the audio tell me if you don’t think it is some Chicanos.
