Fiesta at the Josephinum!

March 7, 2005 by elenamary

Sunday I went to The Pontifical College Josephinium for their ¡Fiesta! The Fiesta was a big Latino party. Piñatas, Arts and Crafts for children, food, a DJ, folkloric dancers, and a Mariachi band. I love Mariachi music but this Mariachi group (from Arizona) played a lot of music I had never heard before. I believe, I have only heard live Mariachi music in México. Perhaps this is why for the first time I saw a Mariachi band play “Twist and Shout“, “Margaritaville“, and “Guantanamera“.

I ask my faithful Chicano readers, is this something that has happened to Mariachi in the United States? This taking of other Latino and “mainstream American” music and turning it Mariachi? It was just very odd to me to hear Guadalajara then Twist and Shout followed by Cucurrucucu Paloma.

A personal note, I want to be proposed by Mariachi. I want to be asleep, and awake to hear Mariachi outside my home singing and asking me to turn on my light. I want to turn on my light and go to the door or window, depending on where I am, and I want to have the love of my life propose to me with the Mariachi playing. At my wedding I want a Mariachi band and I want a Capoeira Roda. You will all be invited to the wedding as soon as I find someone to marry.

I have been warned that I must one day hire a Mariachi band.

Saw Voces Inocentes the other day and there was a pretty precious scene where the little kid sorta improvises a mariachi band outside the house of the girl he has a crush on.

You know, I never realized what the hell a “Guantanamera” was until going to Cuba.

I’ve seen mariachi bands do the same thing at parties, but I always value the traditional songs much more. I had a mariachi at my quinceañera, and am for sure going to have one whenever I get married. I don’t think my dad would let me go without one.

I have fantasies that involved either mariachis or tríos…

  3. yea, seen mariachis do that. its dumb, but that’s what some people like. i think if they do it like they’re joking around, then it’s funny, but not as their main music. whateva pays the bills I reckon.

I loved mariachi music. it’s so passionate and brings out a lot of emotions.
