  2. Brujas y Curanderas

    March 11, 2005 by elenamary

A couple years ago my dad’s girlfriend cursed me, my mother, my siblings and our home. You see my dad’s girlfriend is a witch. I don’t believe in witchcraft but I do believe that there are people who believe they can hurt people by “casting spells”. How did she cast her spell? She broke into our house and be-headed a cat. Can a cat live without his head? I ask because there were cat feces all along the floors and we couldn’t decide if the cat had shat after being beheaded or if my dad’s girlfriend had beheaded the cat and smeared the shit herself? We never found the head of the cat. Before I had discovered the beheaded cat, my mothers office had been broken into and a large amount of blood and been smeared throughout the bathroom. It was found to be cat blood but no one ever figured out were it came from. We think that my dad’s girlfriend took some of the cat blood to the office after killing in the house to make sure her curse would work.
From what I’ve been told it is common for bad witches to use cats in their sorcery.
I cleansed the house myself by putting Holy water in all the rooms, saying a Hail Mary in each room and putting blessed herbs in the form of a cross on each door along with small glossy print out photos of La Virgen which had been blessed by a priest. Later in the week a priest came by and blessed the house himself…I am sure his blessings were much better than mine.
Anyway, I just found out that my dad’s girlfriend killed another cat and threw it into the house…classy. I guess the next time I go to the house I am going to have to cleans it of the evil spirits again. This time though I think I would like to take a curandera, just to see how she works.

  3. Lettter Writing

    March 11, 2005 by elenamary

I have time to write an entry right now because I am stuck in the computer lab waiting for a classmate. A young man who I meet while on the trip to Louisiana (not one I have mentioned to any of you — no not even you Oso) has written me three times. I like it. It was ironic because right before I got the second piece of mail, Preston had said to me “The art of letter writing is dead.” And here is this guy who has been writing me even though I haven’t written back. I will write back but I want to write back a letter and not send him off an email. I used to write letters on a weekly basis now I only send hand written notes through snail mail during Christmas…the art of letter writing is dead.

  4. Happy Meals even Happier

Since I don’t really have time for blogging right now, I wanted to point you all to a very fun blog entry at Twenty Major – still smoking in Dublin bars: Better than Cabbage. He has a blog entry about how Mc Donalds is making their happy meals even happier! Check out his very hillarious entry for some good laughs.

  5. Fiesta at the Josephinum!

    March 7, 2005 by elenamary

Sunday I went to The Pontifical College Josephinium for their ¡Fiesta! The Fiesta was a big Latino party. Piñatas, Arts and Crafts for children, food, a DJ, folkloric dancers, and a Mariachi band. I love Mariachi music but this Mariachi group (from Arizona) played a lot of music I had never heard before. I believe, I have only heard live Mariachi music in México. Perhaps this is why for the first time I saw a Mariachi band play “Twist and Shout“, “Margaritaville“, and “Guantanamera“.

I ask my faithful Chicano readers, is this something that has happened to Mariachi in the United States? This taking of other Latino and “mainstream American” music and turning it Mariachi? It was just very odd to me to hear Guadalajara then Twist and Shout followed by Cucurrucucu Paloma.

A personal note, I want to be proposed by Mariachi. I want to be asleep, and awake to hear Mariachi outside my home singing and asking me to turn on my light. I want to turn on my light and go to the door or window, depending on where I am, and I want to have the love of my life propose to me with the Mariachi playing. At my wedding I want a Mariachi band and I want a Capoeira Roda. You will all be invited to the wedding as soon as I find someone to marry.
