Paul Hackett
July 18, 2005 by elenamary
I am a little pissed with the Democrats right now. Why can’t they get organized?
The Dems are about as organized as my friend Miles who left me this
message today:
“Hey Elenamary, is your cell working?
What’s the deal yo? Call me back. What’s my number?
It has an eight or something in it, you probably have caller ID,
don’t you? you know my number right? Wait what number did I just call?
Yeah, so, umm, call me.”There is a special election going on in Southern Ohio right now. Rob Portman was an Ohio Congressman (Congressional District 2) until May when Dubya appointed him Trade Representative.
This special election congressional race is being held in the reddest congressional district in the State of Ohio. And while the district may be red, the democrat, Paul Hackett, has a damn good chance of winning it. He is exactly what we need in Ohio.
He comes from the the zip code that was the highest contributing ohio zip code for the Bush campaign. He is a marine and served in Iraq. He is a White, 6’4, heterosexual, married with three children. And I like him!
He is pro-choice:
Hackett said he is strongly “pro-choice” and “doesn’t know anyone who thinks abortion is a good thing, but let’s keep it safe, legal and rare.”
Hackett believes in universal access to health care:
Is it too much to expect that some of our tax dollars be allocated towards a fair system that provides affordable healthcare coverage to all Americans?
He is an environmentalist and drives a hybrid:
In 2000 the first hybrid cars hit the American road. I put my money where my mouth is and bought a hybrid that got over 65 mpg. I drive a larger model hybrid now that I have three kids. I still average better than 50mpg. Now hybrids are made in the States, and yes they even make an SUV hybrid!
A few years back I made another painless sacrifice. I replaced all the light bulbs in my house with compact fluorescent bulbs. My electricity savings were dramatic, and now I’m not so annoyed when I come home to my kids playing outside after leaving the lights on in the basement.
You don’t have to be a tree-hugger to conserve energy. American ingenuity has put men on the moon. There’s no doubt we can develop cost-effective alternatives that will reduce or eliminate our dependence on foreign oil. It’s the right thing to do. We just need the will to do it.
A few months back, when the gas topped out at $2.40 or $2.50, I didn’t pay that price. I was in Iraq. I saw how high the price really was.
and he is critical of the war:
Hackett told The Cincinnati Enquirer that the Iraq War has not been worth the price. “We need to develop an exit strategy and execute it. That strategy must committ 100% of our efforts to training the 140,000 Iraqi soldiers to do the jobs that the United States is doing now. We cannot again falsely declare victory.
I first heard of him today and the more I read about him, the more I liked him. I decided this morning to go work on getting him elected.
I’ve worked on GOTV campaigns before. In December I worked for the DCCC for a Louisiana Congressional Candidate. I figured I could best be used on another GOTV campaign. I have experience with DCCC, ACT and Move On, I am also a labor union organizer…campaigns usually want people like me. I figured that since this was a special election and in a swing state the Democrats would have all kinds of opportunities—I was wrong.
I tried contacting the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, America Coming Together, Move On, The Ohio Democratic Party, and the County pages that fall under Congressional District 2. Guess how many people I got a hold of? Zero, Zilch, None.
For those of you who haven’t heard of the DCCC they exist soely to get Democrats in congress. Why the hell don’t they at least have someone I can contact in Ohio and say “put me to work”. At least the DCCC has a webpage.
Many of the Ohio county Dems barely have webpages. Perhaps, I can blame Alexi for the lack of county Dem pages as I think he was supposed to have set them up but then moved to DC (he did get them all Internet access and email addresses–in 2003!)
I flew to Louisiana to work for a candidate whom I disagreed with on every position but I worked hard on GOTV. Because at least she wasn’t as bad as her opponent. Now there is a candidate in my state, the Buckeye State, whom I like, and I can’t seem to find a GOTV campaign. I just don’t get it. The Dems need to get better organized.

Urban Outfitters Racist
July 18, 2005 by elenamary
Urban Outfitters has a new t-shirt with the slogan “New Mexico, Cleaner Than Regular Mexicoâ€Â. What idiot thought this was at all acceptable?
From BlueLatinos.org:
Urban Outfitters recently began selling offensive tee shirts with a slogan: “New Mexico, Cleaner Than Regular Mexico,†conjuring negative and racist ideas of the “the dirty Mexican.†Earlier this year, GUESS Inc. removed a similarly offensive tee shirt from its stores that read: “Ski Colombia-always plenty of fresh powder!†after protests from consumers and people of conscience.
These companies are feeding a social climate where derogatory messages are acceptable. Sign the petition and tell Urban Outfitters to take down the offensive and crude tee shirts.http://www.bluelatinos.org/urbanoutfittersoutrage.htm
We can not stand by and allow corporate America to insult Latinos, no matter what our national heritage. We must stand together against such affronts.
Sign the petition and tell Richard Hayne, President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Urban Outfitters, Inc. to remove the offensive and crude tee shirts.http://www.bluelatinos.org/urbanoutfittersoutrage.htm
Sincerely,
José Quiñonez, BlueLatinos.org

I hate it when
July 17, 2005 by elenamary
I hate it when people ask me if/tell me that I have jungle fever.
I hate it when people ask me if the myth about black men is true.
I hate it when people ask me if I date black men because they have big cocks.
I hate it when people tell me I need to be careful or my babies might be dark.I don’t seem to get any comments from people when I date Latinos or White men but the moment I show interest in a black man a comment is made about “jungle fever“.
I threw a party. The guy I was dating at the time never showed up. He called me in the morning and explained “I drove by your place with Charles and we could see in your kitchen window. All we saw were white people. We figured it would be uncomfortable and they wouldn’t want us there anyway.†I explained to him that there were POC there. I explained to him that my party had mostly split into two groups. All the white people congregated in the kitchen and drank, all the POC surrounded the DJ in another room and danced. The white people went home early (around mid-night) and the POC stayed dancing (until about 5am).
I didn’t pay attention to the self-imposed separation until I found myself telling my male interest that he should have come-up to the party, that there were also non-white people. I felt a similar feeling at a party tonight. The only POC at the party tonight were me and the birthday-boy. The birthday-boy like me is half Latino. I felt out of place. I am just back from Mexico maybe that is what made the difference? Maybe I am going through a mini-culture shock after having hung out with my Mexican friends?
At some point during the party someone started to share stories that made me feel uncomfortable. Her intention wasn’t to be racist and she is a sweet person but what she was saying hurt me. She described her older brother as being mixed and explained that he had also “married a mixed womanâ€Â. “You wouldn’t believe it but their oldest child is white! Really white, like the whitest baby I have ever seen. I told my mom, can you believe that?†She and another young woman talked about how odd and unlikely it was that two mixed people would have a white baby.
I wanted to scream “I am mixed too and you can’t tell!â€Â. Then I was afraid to tell them. Often when people say racist things in front of me and I tell them that I am mixed (I hate the term “mixedâ€Â) they then justify what they were saying and add that they could tell that I “have somethingâ€Â. What the fuck does that mean “have somethingâ€Â? Is it like saying you have something in your nose? I knew you had something in your nose but I didn’t want to say anything. I knew you were a spic but I didn’t want to say anything. BULL SHIT. You didn’t know I was until I told you and now you think that by telling me that you knew it makes you more PC

I like big butts I cannot lie
July 15, 2005 by elenamary
I don’t scratch, I don’t bite, and I don’t pull hair. I do punch and I do kick, but I don’t cat fight.
I think most ladies are used to men grabbing when they shouldn’t. You know you are walking down a crowded street when all of the sudden your ass gets slapped. Whenever, I am inappropriately touched, I punch. Once at a concert the guy behind me squeezed my ass. I turned and without looking punched the man behind me. Turned out the man I punched in the face wasn’t the ass grabber but rather his friend.
Oddly, my ass was recently grabbed and I didn’t punch back. Even my mother was shocked to hear that I didn’t hit the man.
I was in Oaxaca City with Preston. We were looking at soccer jerseys when I felt someone slap my ass. I figured it was Preston as we slap each others asses often. However, when I turned tor ward Preston I realized he was too far away to have done it. It was the man standing right next to me with his wife on the other side of him! I moved over to Preston and whispered in his ear “That man just slapped my ass.” “Really?” “Yes.” “Are you sure?” “Yes, Preston, I am absolutely sure.” “Okay.”
Preston briefly grabbed my hand leading my away from the shirts. He let go of my hand before we passed the man and his wife. As we passed Preston reached over and grabbed the man’s ass. Not a little grab but a big firm squeeze. The man looked shocked and his wife almost equally stunned. After we walked away Preston cursed “That fucking ass hole who does he think he is? I wish I spoke Spanish better, I would’ve told him off.”.
I think grabbing his ass was better than telling him off.
