I’ve been reading a new blog, Planet Grenada, that posts quite a bit about Latino Muslims. I am very interested in learning more about Latinos and African-Americans in the United States who convert to Islam. I would also like to read more about political and social movements of Latinos and African-Americans working together. Abdul-Halim of Planet Grenada has pointed me in the direction of a few blogs that are covering these topics. One of these blogs has been particularly enjoyable; Holla at a Scholar!! : Hip Hop, Politics, Islam, Chess and Martial Arts.
Both Holla at a Scholar and Planet Grenada seem to have political/musical hard-ons for Immortal Technique (understandably so). Holla at a Scholar recently pointed his readers to this disturbing article about how artists like KRS-One, and Immortal Technique are leading us listeners to a Jihad.
…if somebody teetering on the edge of Islamic radicalism has the jihadist message thrust upon him even in the music that he listens to, that may make him far more susceptible to the jihadist worldview. This is doubly true when even No. 1 Billboard singles and acknowledged hip-hop icons like KRS-One echo essential parts of the jihadi message. Thus, jihadi rap could eventually prove to be a real asset for the Islamists.

Hmm.. I agree with the liking of the music but think the right wing webmagazine article although certainly a possiblity is a bit like saying rock and roll caused Vietnam. There is always going to be rebellious tendencies, we celebrate them every 4th of July rap is the latest embodiment of it.

hey there… I’m not sure about hard-on…lol..but I actually did just buy Immortal Technique’s first album today. To be honest, until now I’ve just been reading *about* him and putting the info on my blog because of the obvious connections. (black, latino, and sympathy for the political perspectives of some muslims). Now is the first time I’m actually hearing him.
But i agree with pancho. I think the article on jihadi rap gets it backwards. Instead of looking at “islamist rap” as coming out of nowhere, we should ask why would a Black Peruvian rapper like Immortal Technique, who isn’t even Muslim be critical of US foreign policy in the same way that many Muslims are, or even Jadakiss is. If you see the music go in a certain direction, its because of anger which people are actually feeling, and what they are feeling is a result of their actual situation… their actual reality. It’s not just Islamist, just look at the World Social Forum, the protests in Seattle, the anti-globalization folks… I remember a while ago even reading that students in SOUTH Korea were protesting against U.S. policies. That’s the reality.
If someone doesn’t see that, they are living in the Matrix.
