  1. Blog Day

    August 31, 2005 by elenamary

    BlogThis!

BlogDay was created with the belief that bloggers should have one day dedicated to getting to know other bloggers from other countries and areas of interest. On that day Bloggers will recommend other blogs to their blog visitors.

With the goal in mind, on this day every blogger will post a recommendation of 5 new blogs. In this way, all Blog web surfers will find themselves leaping around and discovering new, previously unknown blogs.

For one long moment on August 31st, bloggers from all over the world will post recommendations of 5 new Blogs, preferably Blogs that are different from their own culture, point of view and attitude. On this day, blog surfers will find themselves leaping around and discovering new, unknown Blogs, celebrating the discovery of new people and new bloggers. FULL TEXT

One of the problems I’ve found with listing 5 international blogs is that there are limitations. I have my self imposed limitations in that I’ve decided not to mention a Mexican blog in that I often link to blogs in Mexico. And I don’t want to mention blogs that I already have on my blogroll page that are international yet Chicano/Mexicano like Julio in Sweeden or El Machete in Australia.

The other limitation is what language should the blogs be in? So, here is the deal. I am going to give 5 who primarly blog in English but whose authors are not from the US or Mexico. And I am giong to give 5 who blog in another language and are not from the US or Mexico.

      INTERNATIONAL BLOGS NOT IN ENGLISH

    1. Helskägg: Gammjävla surgubbe Blogger from Sweeden. Blogs in Sweedish or at least that is what I think it is. But he occcaisionally throws in some English that makes me giggle (because he is funny). I first came across him via Apologise Accepted.

    2. Café da manhã Fresh political blog written in Portuguese and coming out of Portugal (or so I think). Not sure how I first came across it.

    3. Erotismo na Cidade: Cantos De Um Amor Reinventado. Beautiful images, poetry and entries on sensuality and sexuality. Written in Portuguese and I believe coming from Portugal…I am not sure how I first came across this blog.

    4. poof!. 22 year old Julia looks at everything from music to politics. Written in Portuguese and coming out of Brazil…I am not sure how I first came across this blog.

    5. Erotismo Creativo: El Blog de Eros. Coming out of Madrid Spain I think I found this blog via the Portuguese blog Erotismo na Cidada. This blog is written in Spanish includes beautiful images which they describe as “No pretende ser un site pornográfico pero contiene textos explícitos e imágenes que podrían herir ciertas sensibilidades” they don’t bother my “sensabilities” I find the images to be stunning and it is wonderful when a photo can elude so much sexuality without showing sex. For example a close image of a curvaceous mouth.

      INTERNATIONAL BLOGS IN ENGLISH

    1. JezzJournal: is a web journal authored by Jeremy Shields, an aspiring web developer and political student who resides in Winnipeg, MB, Canada. His blog is both a personal journal but also offers great political analysis. I first came across him via Apologise Accepted.

    2. Irish Eagle covering Politics and Sports his comment section is always great to in that you can see people slowly change their opinions or firm up what they weren’t strong believers in before. I also like seeing what the Irish think of the way “Americans” do it and Irish Eagle writes about that frequently too. Not sure how I came across this blog.

    3. Twenty Major: Still Smoking in Dublin Bars This blog makes me laugh more than any other blog I read. Hands down. Becareful though if you are uncomfortable with vulgar language…wait that probably doesn’t apply since you are reading my blog. This blog comes to us from Ireland and I have no idea how I came across it.

    4. Planet Potato: An Irish Blog. Rambelings from a 30 year old Dubliner. A mish-mash of politics, blogging, and quams on everyday Irish life. I think I came across this blog via Irish Eagle.

    5. Slugger O’Toole: Notes on Norther Ireland Politics and Culture Slugger O’Toole, is a news and research portal, looking at various strands of political aspects of life in Northern Ireland. It brings together comment from a full range of the political spectrum, that should be of interest to the specialist and the general reader. From time to time we will seek to create substantial debate in given areas, like Unionism or Nationalism, or in more particular subject areas like the economy, cultural issues or the environment. I came across this blog via Irish Eagle.

If you’d like a more complete list of blogs I read you can check my blog roll.

    Chopper downed by rock repaired

BY JEFFREY GAUTREAUX, Sun Staff Writer
    Aug 24, 2005, 10:26 pm

A new rotor was being brought in Wednesday afternoon to be used as a spare part for a U.S. Border Patrol helicopter brought down by a rock thrown by an illegal immigrant Tuesday, said the patrol’s Yuma sector spokesman….

The helicopter was assisting agents in surveillance and in preventing a group of 17 illegal aliens from running back to Mexico, Gramley said.

While the helicopter hovered over the group, another group of 10 illegal aliens came up south of the All American Canal and threw rocks at the aircraft.

One of the rocks struck the rotor, gashing it near the end of the blade…

…The group of 17 was apprehended, but the group of 10 escaped….

    full text

Dude they were “preventing” “illegal aliens” from going back to Mexico?! I have huge issues with the term “illegal aliens” (no person is illegal an act is illegal but no human being is…and on top of that this is some kind of artifical-drawn-white-man’s-line that says goods but not labor flows, and north of this line you are “indian” south of this line you are Mexican) but how exactly did they know those 10 other people were “undocumented”?

Dude, I think we should go sit along the border with bags of rocks…hell we don’t even need sling shots. We could have a game, everybody gets one rock to take down the chopper chasing our people around like ants under a magnifying glass in the sun. Whoever takes down the chopper first wins.

  4. If you read it, it must be true

    August 27, 2005 by elenamary

If you read it (especially on the internet) then it must be true, no? I grew up being taught to question everything I read or heard. It really hit home though a few years ago when I was reading the NY Times. That day the paper wrote two things that I knew were false. One of the two inaccurate articles was about the condition and treatment of some prisoners. I had just meet these prisoners and been to the prison they were in. Their living standards were nothing as the article had described. The other article that was incorrect was about the president of a small Latin American country. I knew the grandson of this president and I knew the description on the economics of his family by the New York Times was also inaccurate. I was reminded again today while reading the Washington Post to never trust what you read.

The Washington Post wrote about my great state of Ohio and the non-partisan group, Reform Ohio Now!
    From Reform Ohio Now(RON)! website:

Currently, politicians draw legislative districts to guarantee election results by packing as many voters from one Party into a given district. This process assures the incumbent of reelection without having to be responsive to the voters. This system empowers those that contribute to campaigns, not the voters in the district. RON’s Amendment: Would prevent politicians from creating their own legislative districts and prevent decisions from being made behind closed doors without input from citizens

The article in the Washington Post made it appear as if it was the democrats pushing for re-districting reform, when that isn’t the case at all.

“A Democratic-leaning group called Reform Ohio Now has submitted more than 500,000 signatures to put a handful of proposals on the state’s November ballot, including one that would take the power to draw those districts from state lawmakers and give it to an independent panel…

…Republicans, who control the state government and two-thirds of the state’s 18 House districts, are not supportive. “If Democrats want to make Ohio’s elections more competitive, they should start fielding better candidates,” said John McClelland, Ohio Republican Party spokesman.”

So many inaccuracies in so few words. First off I am not sure how the Washington Post decided this was a “democratic leaning group” since one of the three leaders for this campaign is Andy Douglas – former Republican State Supreme Court Justice. The other two leaders are Dennis Eckart- Former CEO of Greater Cleveland Growth Association (I have no idea his political leanings but the Greater Cleveland Growth Association does not appear to be some liberal, tree hugging, granola munching organization) and then of course their third leader is my hero Dr. Herb Asher – Professor Emeritus of Political Science at The Ohio State University, who as far as I know, has never held political office, and whom seems to be spearheading Reform Ohio because he wants our State to be the best State in the nation (okay, okay I have a little a lot of Ohio pride).

What I am getting at is that this is not some kind of left wing we-hate-republicans-so-redistrict-us. In fact the rumor I have heard from some Ohio (statewide and district holding) Dems is that a lot of Dems are not in favor of RON. As far as I know the Ohio Democratic Party (ODP) has not come out in support of RON. Supposedly, out of hopes of one day having the power themselves. However, the Democrats and the Republicans should come out in support of RON. Who wouldn’t want fair representation of all Ohio constituents?

And oh Mr. McClelland, the state democrats should field better Dem candidates? That is true to some extent but also a low blow. What about the Hackett/Schmidtt election where Hackett only lost by 4% of the vote in a district that went 2 to 1 for Bush in 2004? And aren’t your candidates having a little bit of a rough time right now?

I sometimes forget that not everyone knows about what is going on in Ohio. While visiting some friends in Kentucky. My one friend asked me if it was true that the Ohio Bureau of Workers Compensation invested 50 million dollars in rare coins to a rare coin dealer that was a top Republican campaign contributor, and that then Ohio lost millions in their investment because the coin investor lost track over a fifth of the coin investment? Yeah, it is true and we call it coingate, here in these parts.

Another friend who mine actively involved with the Kentucky Young Dems made a crack about how Ohio has a sitting governor that was convicted of four ethics law violations and for failing/forgetting to report about golf outings and other gifts. Yeah, but hey, he’s the grandson of a president. And he even came out and made a statement before appearing in court saying

“I take full responsibility for any errors and omissions and will continue to cooperate with the (Ethics) Commission in this matter.”

And he did take full responsibility by pleading “No Contest” instead of “Guilty”…

[Anyone know of any Latinos particularly Chicano blogeros from Kentucky?]

I went to Louisville, Kentucky this past weekend. I enjoyed the Kentucky State Fair, a baseball game between the Louisville Bats and the Columbus Clippers (Caonabo was playing). I hung out with some friends of mine who are very active with the Kentucky Young Dems which was hillarious as they have a lot of Kentucky Pride and I have a lot of Ohio Pride. And so there were of course dicussions like “Why does Kentucky do such and such?” “Ohio has a better state fair.” “Kentucky doesn’t even have a butter cow!”

And of course on my quest for Mexicans in the Midwest, Kentucky proved to be very satisfiying. Kentucky has a lot of horse farms and tobacco farms, as such it employs a lot of migrant workers. Yes, we are everywhere! Here is some Mextucky news for you:
