Let me be clear about one thing, I don’t know how to blog well.

The first time someone commented on my blog and it wasn’t spam or someone I knew, it was Xicano Godfather Julio of Younder Lies It. And I freaked out! Why was someone reading my blog?! And why was he linking to it?!

In complete honesty i am not sure why i have a blog. i know i do like sharing with my friends what is going on and reading their comments. Today I got a comment from a Xicano, Julio, in Sweeden. He added a link to my blog on his page. It frightens me. Mostly, because that list has a bunch of Xicano’s discussing real issues, from Ana Castillo discussing Latin@ lit to the war in Iraq. My blog is so not serious. Dear lord my last entry was about my crush…I sound like I am 12. I got to email this guy and ask him how he came across elenamary.com. Also, ask him why he added me to his link list. I wonder if it is because of my race crisis issues? I got my own little nitch, you know? White Latina who dates Black men who struggle with their own race and cultural identities? My blog is ridicuoulsly petty, and self centered the other ones are interesting to multiple people not just friends. My blog like almost all blogs is a waste of space. Not really intersting, for the most part, except to those who are mentioned in an entry. Anyway, I am freaking out.
Can I also add that his blog (and the other people’s blogs) are not only intersting but well written. Mine on the other hand tends to be me typing almost at the rate of my thought process, leaving no time for grammer or spell check or even caring…yeah still freaking out.

Funny, now I think of Julio as a friend and part of my Xicano blogging familia. I want Equinox (EQ) to have his own blogging community. And I’ve got to give big thanks to Myke and Agustin for leaving him comments. Below is an email I sent to EQ on how to improve his blog. Anyone else want to reccomend anything?

Babe, I have some unsolicited advice for you regarding your blog;

Register with Globe of Blogs.

Include links on your blog entries. For example when referring to the 614 Unity show link to it. When referring to a DJ link to them or their myspace site.

Link to yourself too, like your own myspace account. Maybe even get a free flickr account. Adding bits of personal information makes entries more enjoyable to read.

I like it when you share personal bits and luckily you haven’t fallen into the way personal blogs tell us info that no one, not even their friends, care about.

Include pictures if you can, of shows, of yourself, of vinyl any related image will do. Images catch your attention and of course are fun to look at!

Comment on blogs similar to yours. Decide what your goal is with your blog. Do you want to tell people about the hip hop scene in Columbus? Comment on blogs that discuss hip hop in other Ohio cities or in the midwest or anywhere in the world.

Return the favor, if someone visits your blog, return the favor by visiting theirs. If you like what you see on their blog leave a comment saying so.

Find what interests you and write about that. Frustrated with labels, venues, record stores? Talk about that.
