Rosa Parks said she wanted to be remembered “as a person who wanted to be free and wanted others to be free.” In a 1984 radio interview she said that sometimes she couldn’t escape the fame and responsibility that was thrust upon her.

I could talk about the very important issues on the ballot (which are being watched nationally) and I will…tomorrow…but first lets talk about the superficial and that is the flirting with men.

You can learn a lot about someone when handing them politically progressive material, by their responses. It is sexy when a man tells you he always votes, knows about the issues and asks you questions about the issues in order to be informed.

Anyone know of any other places to hit on men convince young men people to get out and vote?

  4. Television, the drug of the nation

…Television, the drug of the nation

T.V. is the reason why less than ten percent
of our nation reads books daily
why most people think Central America means Kansas

and apartheid is a new headache remedy…
      -The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy

Last week I got out of class early but was exhausted after being on campus for over 12 hours. When I got home, I did what most people do when they don’t want to think, I watched television.

While Seyd may not be a big fan of the George Lopez show I love it, despite the Cuban wife.

I really have a hard time identifying with the Cuban part and it seems a little forced. Like they wanted to be inclusive of many Latinos so they threw in some Cubans with the Mexicans…it just doesn’t work. And now there is a new show on right afterwards called Freddie about a Puerto Rican family.

The most (perhaps the only) hilarious thing about this show is that this Puerto Rican family’s last name is “Moreno”. Moreno means “dark skinned” in Spanish and let me tell you not one member of this “Puerto Rican” family is dark. I will give this though, the grandmother is played by Jenny Gago who although Peruvian can do a hell-of-a Puerto Rican accent and pretty damn good Mexican one (she was in Mi Familia). In fact I think the only person on the show who is at all Puerto Rican is Freddie Prinze Jr. Freddie’s sister is played by an Argentinean-American, and his niece by a 1/2 Honduran-American young girl, again though remember they are all Puerto Rican. A Puerto Rican family and yet after two episodes I’ve yet to see a moreno Puerto Rican forget even an afro-Puerto-Rican.

I guess it doesn’t matter that they are all light skinned. It was still realistically Puerto Rican because you know they talked about flan and how to catch a husband with flan…and you know those Puerto Ricans and their flan (sarcasm).

It really is too bad this show sucks. They should let all the “morenos” working behind the camera for hourly rates write the script…then maybe it would be a bit entertaining.

*Update* I forgot to mention that George Lopez’s show last week had Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa as a guest…yeah, I was foaming at the mouth with excitement*

  5. how do you say…

    October 20, 2005 by elenamary

Some of you may have caught in my previous entry that I used the word “costal” because I don’t know what you call that kind of sack in English. English has a word for it I just don’t know what it is. Sometimes however, there are things I can’t explain from one language to another. For example right now I am sin ganas.
How do I explain that to people? The Yahoo! online dictionary says:

    gana
    (Spanish)

    ga·na
    f.
    1. (deseo) – desire, longing
    2. (apetito) – appetite
darle ganas (darle la gana de) – to feel like
de buena (mala) gana – willingly (unwillingly)
    de gana – energetically, eagerly

    f. pl.
    con ganas – heartily
tener ganas de – to want to, feel like
    sin ganas – unwillingly

I am sin ganas not “unwillingly”. I want to climb into bed and sleep. Or go spend the day sipping on cider and shooting with Equinox. Some of you may find this odd. Ohio has a “right to carry concealed” gun, and I am thinking of getting my license to do so. But really the truth is I just want to sit and veg for a little bit. I don’t have any anima or ganas. Which isn’t that I am unwilling but that part of my spirit has left me and is currently lost.

  6. How to blog?

    October 18, 2005 by elenamary

Let me be clear about one thing, I don’t know how to blog well.

The first time someone commented on my blog and it wasn’t spam or someone I knew, it was Xicano Godfather Julio of Younder Lies It. And I freaked out! Why was someone reading my blog?! And why was he linking to it?!
From my entry back in Feburary 2004 it’s a small world after all

In complete honesty i am not sure why i have a blog. i know i do like sharing with my friends what is going on and reading their comments. Today I got a comment from a Xicano, Julio, in Sweeden. He added a link to my blog on his page. It frightens me. Mostly, because that list has a bunch of Xicano’s discussing real issues, from Ana Castillo discussing Latin@ lit to the war in Iraq. My blog is so not serious. Dear lord my last entry was about my crush…I sound like I am 12. I got to email this guy and ask him how he came across elenamary.com. Also, ask him why he added me to his link list. I wonder if it is because of my race crisis issues? I got my own little nitch, you know? White Latina who dates Black men who struggle with their own race and cultural identities? My blog is ridicuoulsly petty, and self centered the other ones are interesting to multiple people not just friends. My blog like almost all blogs is a waste of space. Not really intersting, for the most part, except to those who are mentioned in an entry. Anyway, I am freaking out.
Can I also add that his blog (and the other people’s blogs) are not only intersting but well written. Mine on the other hand tends to be me typing almost at the rate of my thought process, leaving no time for grammer or spell check or even caring…yeah still freaking out.

Funny, now I think of Julio as a friend and part of my Xicano blogging familia. I want Equinox (EQ) to have his own blogging community. And I’ve got to give big thanks to Myke and Agustin for leaving him comments. Below is an email I sent to EQ on how to improve his blog. Anyone else want to reccomend anything?

    Babe, I have some unsolicited advice for you regarding your blog;

    Register with Globe of Blogs.

Include links on your blog entries. For example when referring to the 614 Unity show link to it. When referring to a DJ link to them or their myspace site.

Link to yourself too, like your own myspace account. Maybe even get a free flickr account. Adding bits of personal information makes entries more enjoyable to read.

I like it when you share personal bits and luckily you haven’t fallen into the way personal blogs tell us info that no one, not even their friends, care about.

Include pictures if you can, of shows, of yourself, of vinyl any related image will do. Images catch your attention and of course are fun to look at!

Comment on blogs similar to yours. Decide what your goal is with your blog. Do you want to tell people about the hip hop scene in Columbus? Comment on blogs that discuss hip hop in other Ohio cities or in the midwest or anywhere in the world.

Return the favor, if someone visits your blog, return the favor by visiting theirs. If you like what you see on their blog leave a comment saying so.

Find what interests you and write about that. Frustrated with labels, venues, record stores? Talk about that.

    hugs,
    Elenamary
