newspaper

I first saw Real Women Have Curves in the theater and in the opening scene the main character Ana (America Ferrera) is washing the windows with soapy newspaper. A smile came to my face. This was real. Are we (Mexicanos) the only ones that clean windows with newspaper? It feels like it.
A couple of days ago after handing my mother’s boyfriend (an Anglo) the broom he asked me where the dustpan was. I told him didn’t know where a dustpan was, I never used them. He asked me how it was I could sweep and not use a dustpan. Well, wet newspaper of course!
Is this another thing only Mexicans do? Anyone?

As an aside, does anyone read the weekly latinos in ohio section? Do any of you click on the articles?

How funny! We wash windows with newspaper too! I have to also say that while we do have a dustpan in the house it rarely gets used. This is partly because I can never find it and it is much easier and quicker to grab a piece of newspaper or loose paper laying around than going to find the dustpan.

I use dustpans and I use paper towels to clean windows.

My mom used old cloth diapers to clean everything.

My mother uses newspapers to clean windows… although I will check with her to see if she’s Mexicano. I use paper towels… mostly because they’re easier access… I have a pile of unread newspapers that are still in the plastic wrapper… I would actually have to open them to use them for cleaning….

I only use the newspaper for the windows of the cars, and I almost always used a dustpan, except when it was lost. And then my mom would have me use thin cardboard.

I use a rolled tortilla to push food from my plate on to my fork. People think I am weird when I do this…

As for when I am sweeping, I use a hand-held vacuum to suck up everything!

i used to use newspapers for washing windows, but then my family, for some reason, started experimenting with different materials. then one of my uncles started cleaning offices and he then ‘revolutionized’ the way the family does the windows with this ‘franela’ or special cloth.

I think I’ve looked at a couple of Latinos in Ohio links, probably just about soccer games in Columbus. But don’t go on what your commenters say. Do it if you enjoy it.

I still use the newspaper instead of a dustpan.

What about using a paper plate and/or cardboard to make a “tubo” to pour liquids in your car (e.g., la gasolina, oil)? That’s my favorite one.

My dad taught me to use newspaper to clean the windows on cars. I can’t remember what we used for the windows in the house.

I thought my familly was the only one NOT using a dustpan! Now that my husband and I have our own home, I still don’t use a dustpan- there’s no reason to! My husband thinks I’m “weird”…

Un fuerte y caluroso abrazo.
Cuidate!

I usually get a papertowel and soak it to pick up dirt that has been swept up…
