  1. foster child, what to do?

    March 30, 2006 by elenamary

The family I previously wrote about is doing well for the most part. Two young women passed away, both of them single mothers. The rest of the passengers except for two, are all out of the hospital. One young man age 21 is still in critical condition in the hospital, as is one young child age 5. Something has occurred changing the situation for all of the passengers, so that for now, I cannot provide detailed updates on anyone.

However, one of the passengers a 12 year-old boy who was orphaned because of the car accident will be staying with my mother and I for an indefinite amount of time. We will try and enroll him when he gets her, get him up to date on all his vaccinations and such. I lost my job today which in some ways is good and bad. Good because I will have more time to dedicate to the boy. Bad because we needed that money so that I could help out with the boy. We are unable to receive any government assistance for the young child because he is not a citizen or resident.

We have found him a therapist who is bilingual who specializes in child and family therapy. A friend of mine has offered to help me get him a membership at the Columbus YMCA. I was hoping (and am still going to try and do it) to purchase the young boy a video game system, any recommendations on a game system? Any recommendations on having a foster child? A Zapotec & Spanish speaking foster child who doesn’t speak English? Anyone?

  2. Fighting For The Irish

    March 27, 2006 by elenamary

     FIGHTING FOR THE IRISH

My daddy is Irish. I know I focus a lot more on my Mexican side and it is mostly, I think because it is more recent. I’ve never been to Ireland. I know a lot less about Irish culture than I do about Mexican culture. In fact my Irish upbringing is some watered down Irish-Americanism. It is my dad hanging up a picture of RFK and JFK next to our Aztec calendar. It is my father getting tipsy while watching soccer games and singing Irish folk songs. It is my Irish-American grandfather making sure I went to “good” Irish Catholic mass. It is my uncle Kevin, telling my mom to make sure us kids never married English.

My Irish side is stereotypically Irish-American along with me having a disdain for those colonizing English.

My Mexican side is much more ubiquitous because I grew up with it. I lived in Mexico, went to school in Mexico, visit it frequently, still have friends and close family there. My Mexican mother became a citizen only a couple years ago, while my Irish-American father has had family here in Ohio for generations.

Anyway, I’ve been thinking about this because yesterday at the rally someone from the Irish Lobby For Immigration Reform spoke and mentioned 50,000 undocumented Irish in the United States. I think that is something many of us forget is that there are many undocumented people here, not just from Mexico, not just from Latin America, but from all over the world.

I think the Irish-Mexican combination makes a lot of sense particularly in terms of Catholicism and immigration.

Reminds me of a quote from Bernadette Devlin McAliskey an Irish civil rights leader:

I was not very long there until, like water, I found my own level. ‘My people’ the people who know about oppression, discrimination, prejudice, poverty and the frustration and despair that they produce were not Irish Americans. They were black, Puerto Rican, Chicano. And those who were supposed to be ‘my people’, the Irish Americans who know about English misrule and the Famine and supported the civil-rights movement at home, and knew that Partition and England were the cause of the problem, looked and sounded to me like Orangemen. They said exactly the same things about blacks that the loyalists said about us at home. In New York, I was given the key to the city by the mayor, an honour not to be sneezed at. I gave it to the Black Panthers.

  3. Mama Illegal

    Mama Illegal

My mom doesn’t get political too often but dear lord when she does stand back.
Today we went to a rally at the state house against HR 4437. This piece of legislation would make a felon out of anyone assisting an undocumented person. That is if you provided food or housing to an abused woman who happened to be undocumented than you would be committing a felony.
My mama’s sign says “Human Beings Are Not Illegal”.

This is my stance with the term “illegals”, people cannot/should not be illegal, their acts may be illegal but they themselves are not “illegal”.

  • STATE-WIDE MOBILIZATION

    March 24, 2006 by elenamary

    SUNDAY MARCH 26, 2006
    STATE CAPITOL
    COLUMBUS, OHIO
    RALLY AT 2:00 PM

ORGANIZED BY: RED DE INMIGRANTES DE OHIO (RIO), FLOC, CODEDI, COMITE
GUATEMALTECO DE CINCINNATI, IMMIGRANT WORKER PROJECT, INMIGRANTES MAYAS GUATEMALTECOS (MIGUATE), AND MANY OTHERS.

A rally is scheduled Sunday afternoon at the State House around
immigration reform. Some background: In December, the House passed a
bill that would expand the definition of alien smuggler to include
anyone who provides services (legal, housing, food assistance,
counseling, transportation, etc.) to an undocumented person. People
providing services to undocumented people would be open to prosecution.
This standard remains in place even if the person is unaware of the
undocumented status of the person(s). The Senate Judiciary Committee
(of which Senator Dewine is a member) is debating immigration bills. If
enacted, this legislation would make any ministry or service to
immigrant populations very difficult. It also does not involve
    comprehensive immigration reform.

If you are able, please attend the rally on Sunday. The strangers in our
midst need and desire an accompanying voice and presence throughout this
debate. You are also encouraged to call Senator Dewine to express your
concern about HR 4437. Your voice is essential!

  • A FREE Album of Great Music

    March 19, 2006 by elenamary

    Hipster Kid 1: “Knock Knock”
    Hipster Kid 2: “Who’s there?”
Hipster Kid 1: “What?! You haven’t already heard this one?!”

You know all those cool hip kids who find out about great new music before anyone else? I am about to make all of you one of those hip kids. For those of you who haven’t heard of Masterminds or Company Flow then I am about to make you cooler than you have ever been in your life!

The Masterminds had Kimani Rogers and Company Flow had Mr. Len. What happens when you combine Mr. Len and Kimani Rogers? You get a black muppet. Seriously, it isn’t some kind of hipster joke, you get a black muppet named Roosevelt Franklin. Kind-of. You see Mr. Len and Kimani got together and formed the group Roosevelt Franklin. Now they have their second record out Bare Food. And they are doing something revolutionary. They are giving it out for FREE.

Before their label starts charging and distributing the album they are giving it to fans for free. They want as many people as possible to have their music. And we should be happy and grateful for it, because this is some good music.
    bare food cover

Their music is fun and playful—just like muppet love. It is catchy and it is being spread for you. As their opening song starts:

this is for those nitpicking idiots, the sycophantic hypocrites
who scream out, “underground” but make it sound just so ridiculous
and me i’m fucking sick of it, I make records for distributing
for the masses to consume it if they can jump aboard the movement

Come on people jump on the true underground, fun and no one taking themselves too seriously. One of my favorite songs is I Saw It On Oprah

Don’t smoke crack, mcdonald’s makes you fat and the gas prices are high
Bill gates is rich, and Madonna is a bitch and brad and jen bye bye
The President’s a dummy, the Donald has money and mad cow makes you sick
Jacko’s a wacko, cancer from tobacco and fish goes good with grits
    I saw it on oprah
    I saw it on oprah
So I know it must be true

And my second favorite song is Alone Together. I am embarrassed to say that I found myself singing along to “Alone Together” without listening to the lyrics. The lyrics get wonderfully stuck in your head and you can’t help but sing along. I am embarrassed though because once I stopped to listen to the words, and not just sing along, I was moved. Don’t worry though, not to get too sappy on you go ahead and listen to “Tres Minutos” which I would say is actually my number one favorite, but then I am sure you will all laugh at me once you hear it…ahh go ahead and listen to it and laugh too!

Go download it! It is good and free and you can be a hipster and say “Ohh yeah, I got Bare Food, before you could buy it in stores”. Go spread the word, let’s get this music to spread faster than herpes in a sorority.

PS Roosevelt Franklin has a blog titled “White People Love Us“.
