foster child, what to do?

March 30, 2006 by elenamary

The family I previously wrote about is doing well for the most part. Two young women passed away, both of them single mothers. The rest of the passengers except for two, are all out of the hospital. One young man age 21 is still in critical condition in the hospital, as is one young child age 5. Something has occurred changing the situation for all of the passengers, so that for now, I cannot provide detailed updates on anyone.

However, one of the passengers a 12 year-old boy who was orphaned because of the car accident will be staying with my mother and I for an indefinite amount of time. We will try and enroll him when he gets her, get him up to date on all his vaccinations and such. I lost my job today which in some ways is good and bad. Good because I will have more time to dedicate to the boy. Bad because we needed that money so that I could help out with the boy. We are unable to receive any government assistance for the young child because he is not a citizen or resident.

We have found him a therapist who is bilingual who specializes in child and family therapy. A friend of mine has offered to help me get him a membership at the Columbus YMCA. I was hoping (and am still going to try and do it) to purchase the young boy a video game system, any recommendations on a game system? Any recommendations on having a foster child? A Zapotec & Spanish speaking foster child who doesn’t speak English? Anyone?

Oh what a horrible situation! Poor baby for losing his mami! And what a wonderful human being you are for taking him in. That said, I have NO advise on what to do. I guess I’d just shower him with love (within his limits) and start teaching him English so he has something to work with when he gets into school. Perhaps the therapist will have connections to other places that can help out. Good luck!

  2. oh, elenamary, i am so so sorry to hear about the mothers…i have been thinking a lot about this family–please, give the boy an extra special big love hug from me, ok?

hey, i wish you could tell us about little Olga. I have a young child myself, and i know that it must be really hard for her. if there’s anything i can do, let me know.

  5. Ay que tragedia mujer. But you and your mom are angel for cuidando the boy.

A gamebuy is pretty inexpensive and he can carry it around….la Mapu (mi hija) favors a gamecube
