A rally is scheduled Sunday afternoon at the State House around
immigration reform. Some background: In December, the House passed a
bill that would expand the definition of alien smuggler to include
anyone who provides services (legal, housing, food assistance,
counseling, transportation, etc.) to an undocumented person. People
providing services to undocumented people would be open to prosecution.
This standard remains in place even if the person is unaware of the
undocumented status of the person(s). The Senate Judiciary Committee
(of which Senator Dewine is a member) is debating immigration bills. If
enacted, this legislation would make any ministry or service to
immigrant populations very difficult. It also does not involve
comprehensive immigration reform.
If you are able, please attend the rally on Sunday. The strangers in our
midst need and desire an accompanying voice and presence throughout this
debate. You are also encouraged to call Senator Dewine to express your
concern about HR 4437. Your voice is essential!
