  1. Latino does not equal undocumented

    April 30, 2006 by elenamary

    Dear Columbus Dispatch,

I was getting ready to go out and enjoy my Sunday morning when I noticed the front page of the newspaper with the Headline “Latino Protests to take Many Forms” and a sub headline for another article “Mexicans pushing ‘Nothing Gringo’ campaign”.

Your headlines and sub headlines are misleading and false. Monday’s economic mobilization participants are those in support of immigrants rights. Not just Latinos. Undocumented immigrants come from many different continents including Europe, Asia, and Africa. Additionally, Latinos does not equate to the word “illegal immigrants” nor does the word Latino equate to Mexican, which your article misleads readers to believe.

Supporters of immigrant rights and new legislation are being asked to take a day away from their normal activities whether it be work, school, or shopping. They are being asked to wear white, and attend local gatherings in support of reform. This is not just a boycott by undocumented workers but by supporters as well, while your article misleads again by insinuating that it is the undocumented who are protesting.

If you would like more information here is a good article at alternet on why one person will boycott on May 1st. If you would like help on what terms like “Latino” and “Mexican” mean you can click here.

    Igualdad

“SI” A LA REFORMA JUSTA DE LAS LEYES DE INMIGRACIÓN
    NO A LOS MUROS
NO A LA SEPARACIÓN DE LAS FAMILIAS
NO A LA CRIMINALIZACIÓN DE INMIGRANTES

Recent raids by immigration of a pallet company with facilities on several
states, including Columbus and Cincinnati in Ohio, show the urgent need
for comprehensive and fair immigration reform to benefit both, employers
and workers. It is not a coincidence that these raids are taking place
right after millions of people have taken to the streets to protest the
attacks on immigrants. Evidently they try to create a climate of fear in
the community. We urge the government not to spend more tax payer
resources persecuting peasants, pallet workers and landscapers who are
just trying to make a living and sustain their families. We urge Congress
to pass “Ag Jobs” for farm workers and the Kennedy-McCain “Secure America
Act”, introduced in 2005. Both represent efficient, logic, comprehensive
and just immigration reform proposals that would benefit the whole
    country.

    DIGNITY, RESPECT, HOPE
America is a nation of immigrants founded on the basis of Justice
    andEquality

YES! TO A JUST IMMIGRATION REFORM
    NO TO THE WALLS!
NO TO THE SEPARATION OF FAMILIES!
NO TO THE CRIMINALIZATION OF IMMIGRANTS

  4. Nick Lachey, go ahead and take it off, but I won’t look

    April 21, 2006 by elenamary

Every time I want to write something I remember that I shouldn’t because I am looking for a job and someone might stumble upon it. But fuck it.

I was driving home from biology lab this evening listening to the top-40 bubble gum radio station and they mentioned that Nick Lachey was offered to pose for Playgirl. While I am not a huge fan of Nick Lachey I did watch a few episodes of Newlyweds.
So, I am driving, and thinking of Nick Lachey posing nude for Playgirl. My first thought is DAMN! I am going to have to buy that. But after much deliberation, I decide it isn’t a good idea. What if I see his dick and am disappointed? Then what? Then whenever I see him I’ll think “your dick is ugly”. Nahhh, I guess I won’t be buying it. I’d rather like to continue believing that all dicks I haven’t seen are beautiful. Maybe I am a little naïve but hey, that means that I think half of my readers are looking good.

My mom says the thing lacking in the civil rights movement (yes, civil rights movement) right now is a leader. She says we need a Malcolm X, a Martin Luther King Jr.

I am not saying Cristina is that leader and I don’t dare compare my sister to either of them, but I do think Cristina is sprouting as a leader in Austin, Texas.

  6. Water polo

    April 11, 2006 by elenamary

We only dated the blink of an eye but it was the first *new* person I dated in years, he had a big impact on me.

“Is it true your high school had a water polo team?” he asked me quizzically.
I wasn’t really sure I had heard him correctly and he repeated “Is it true your high school had a water polo team? ‘Steve’ told me you guys have a water polo team.”
Ahh Steve a pompous man, who one of my friends had to file a restraining order against.
“Yeah, we had a water polo team. We were often state champs. Didn’t your school have a water polo team?”
“No. You guys were probably state champs because you didn’t play against anyone else. Not everyone has a water polo team, you know?” He seemed shocked at the fact that I thought his school had a water polo team but I was even more shocked that it didn’t.
“Yeah, I know not every school has a water polo team but you went to private school. I mean you guys had a swim team right?” he nodded and I continued “Well, didn’t they play water polo in the off season?” He looked at me and now I realize he was patient in his explanation that while they did have a swim team it was never more than three people who had to go to another school to practice. How did I respond? I looked him in the eyes and asked “Then I guess you guys didn’t have a diving team either?”

I thought about that conversation this afternoon when I got a phone call. I got a call to write an article for a “black” “urban” “youth” newspaper. The world is messed up and so am I.
