  1. Latina Feministas Contra La Pendeja Palintonta

    October 6, 2008 by elenamary

During the debates I got angrier and angrier about Sarah Palin. When she was first announced as the VP Candidate I was annoyed but not surprised that a group of old white man thought this was their best plan. But as time has gone on, I am more and more insulted as an American, as a woman, as a Latina, as an independent voter, that Sarah Palin is representing anyone.

As such we formed an independent group of Latina Feministas Contra La Pendeja Palintonta (Latina Feminists united against Dumbass Palin). Blog entries will be written about Latinas who don’t want a candidate becuase she is a woman, but want the best candidate for our country.

If you are interested in contributing to the blog, please either leave me a comment here or one on Latina Feministas Contra La Pendeja Palintonta.

  2. Yes officer, today I’m white

    August 28, 2008 by elenamary

I was driving down Fourth Avenue today.  Fourth is a speedy one way, five lane street.  Many of the streets that deposit into and exit out of Fourth Avenue are also one way.  I was on the phone talking to a friend, as I started to make a left turn and was getting ready to make joke with my friend that on the corner of the street was an Asian police officer…something I’d never seen before in Columbus.  It was then I realized that I couldn’t continue with my turn because the street was one way in the wrong direction.

The officer saw me and told me not to back up and continue with traffic (I was not blocking traffic) but to go ahead and continue down and then turn around…so I did.  I drove a few hundred feet and turned into an abandoned lot in order to turn around.  During all of this there was porch with about seven or eight black men on it, and they kept screaming something at me which I couldn’t make out.  I figured they were telling me I was going the wrong way and decided to ignore it at first but then realized they were saying things like “Ohh they are gonna get you”.  Almost at the same time I saw a police car pull up behind me blocking my exit.  In the car were two white officers.  I turned my car off and then heard the people on the porch loudly arguing that nothing was going to happen to me because I was white.

One of the officers got out of the car and came up to my window.  “Do you know this is a one-way street?” Trying not to sound nervous I said “Yes, but  the officer standing on the corner told me to go ahead and come down this street to turn around, rather than back up into traffic.” He smiled and answered “Well next time try to pay more attention.  Have a nice day.”  I said thank you and turned my car back on as the men on the porch began to holler that they were right that the police weren’t going to do anything.  As I drove past the men a few yelled that I was only being let off because I was white.

Odds are really good that I wasn’t hassled because I was a woman, and because in the eyes of everyone involved, I was white.   But what was I going to say?

  3. Atmosphere – Judge not lest ye be judged

    August 12, 2008 by elenamary

I no longer will judge you, Bukowski, by the tiny clip of you kicking the shit out of your girlfriend (I’d seen the whole documentary not just the clip and it had disturbed me). Nor will I judge you Slug, by your womanizing.

I’ve had issues with Slug (of Atmosphere fame) because of the widespread gossip of his womanizing. An ex of mine (and friend of Slug’s), who is as I see it also a womanizer, would even occasionally mention some of Slug’s behavior as womanizing. I like Slug’s music, love his music but wouldn’t allow myself to admit it. How could I like someone who occasionally behaved in ways I was totally against?

El Oso and I even discussed it a few years back when I mentioned I was going to an Atmosphere show:

    “EM,

I’m jealous. Although, last night I was talking to the person who first introduced me to Atmosphere on a mix tape (ah the lost art of the mix tape) which had The Woman With The Tattooed Hands on it. She said she forever lost her faith in Slug when she saw him live. He was bringing up random girls on stage, making out with them, then talking shit and kicking them off. It’s a second hand account and rappers don’t have to be heroes, but I certainly expected something more from someone as thoughtful (ie. full of thought) as Slug.”

The ex who would mention Slug’s treatment of women, is also a decently well known musician, and he spoke more about his admiration for Slug then he did of the womanizing. He would speak of Slug’s dedication to his music, to his work. He’d tell me about Slug always working while on tour, always working to get his name out there. Slug, himself, has rhymed about that struggle and the sacrifices that he has made because of his self-promotion. My ex stated that he would never be as well known as Slug, for many reasons but for one, because he would never be willing to work at it as hard as Slug had or give-up time with his own children.

It was today that I realized how hard Slug, Atmosphere, have worked at their music. Today I turned on my car radio and their song “You” was playing. Later I heard the same song coming out of a parked car in the parking lot of the welfare office. As I drove home from work today an SUV pulled up along side next to me with the same song playing. At happy hour with my girlfriend, she mentioned hearing an interview on BBC with Slug today and how she was shocked the BBC was interviewing him.

I’ve got to admit it Slug has worked hard and deserves all he can get. He shouldn’t be judged by a small part of his life, but as a whole person, and like all of us, he isn’t perfect.

It is unfair for El Oso, my ex, or myself to judge Slug on rumors or even small parts of his life. We can in fact, and do, still admire Slug, as El Oso put it a few years ago: “Slug could very well be my favorite poet of his generation.
And I think El Oso is right. Atmosphere’s new album is one of my favorite albums of all time. Respect given where respect is deserved; Slug is an amazing poet and a hard worker. Keep up the good work Slug, and if you come to Columbus, I’ll make you a home cooked meal.

You can listen to some Atmosphere here, some Slug here, or listen to the You song (as well as some other new songs) here.

  4. Michelle, Two for the Price of One?

    May 15, 2008 by elenamary

The election I most clearly remember of my youth was that of when I was 11-12. I remember Bill Clinton’s dream team. I had a crush on both George Stephanopoulos and James Carville. And I liked the slogan I often heard “Two for the price of one” referring to Bill and Hillary. Now, as I get excited about Barack, I wonder why no one ever says that with Barack we get Michelle, two for the price of one, no?

Michelle Obama is an independent strong woman. Her education is solid with her bachelors from Princeton her JD from Harvard. She has worked in politics, in non-profits and in higher education. If Michelle has worked hard along side of Barack as she continued to raise two daughters and maintain her own career why do we not applaud her as we did Hillary Clinton? Why aren’t people screaming “Two for the price of one!”?

We applaud barrack Obama for his accomplishments. Who would have ever thought a black man had a realistic chance of becoming president? Who would have ever thought that a black man could win the Iowa caucuses? Iowa, a state with a 2% African-American population where 27% of those incarcerated in the state are African-American. He won Iowa?!

Who would’ve thought Hillary could show her self to be a strong force to be reckoned with in the ol’ boys club? Who would’ve thought she could still stand strong as a politician on her own two feet after being knocked down so many times?

Michelle has demonstrated her ability as a lawyer, as an advocate, as a community organizer, as a mother, as a black woman who went through the aristocratic hoops of an education, political, and social system that has fought so long to keep both women and minorities out. She is someone who has fought through the glass ceiling in ways that Barack never did as a man, and Hillary never did as white. If Michelle is diplomatic and strong enough to successfully weave in and out so many places why aren’t we saying, “two for the price of one” ?

Why aren’t we screaming “TWO FOR THE PRICE OF ONE!”?

  5. HispanicBusiness.com should have talked to Matt Ortega

    April 30, 2008 by elenamary

I applied for Hsipanic Business Magazine Woman of the Year Scholarship.

Last years winners were quite amazing. Then I realized I was in for some competition but I still couldn’t help but get excited about it. The scholarship was based on a essay with the following requirements:

“The focus of this essay should be your long-term goals and aspirations, as well as the challenges you face in meeting these goals. Judging will also assess creativity, motivation, and inspiration. Your essay may also include your family background, scholastic achievements, educational and career goals, commitment to the Hispanic community, financial need, and any other relevant information. The essay should be limited to 500 words.”

It is hard to get that all down in just 500 words. I did my best and unsuccessfully tried to not get my hopes up. In the end I was not selected for the honor. I am sure the women they did select are amazing Latinas and I tip my hat to them. Now if only, they had listened to Matt Ortega. Below is my essay.
